From Milan to Barcelona: the unveiling of Roca’s Nutura Pavilion at Roca Barcelona Gallery

05/10/2023

Following the success of Nutura at Milan Design Week 2023, Nutura Pavilion, designed by Benedetta Tagliabue – EMBT Architects was inaugurated during the opening of Barcelona Design Week 2023.

Attracting more than 350 attendees from Barcelona’s design, architecture, and the art sectors, the debut of the Nutura Pavilion as the official launch of the 18th Barcelona Design Week was a great success. Benedetta Tagliabue, the creative mind behind Nutura, took centre stage in an inspiring dialogue with Alessandro Manetti, director of Barcelona Design Week, set against the stunning backdrop of the refurbished Barcelona Roca Barcelona Gallery. In "A conversation beyond design: Nutura, from Milano to Barcelona" Benedetta Tagliabue presented and discussed the installation, from the creation process, through to its debut at the Fuorisalone in Milan, and its adaptation to the unique space of the Roca Barcelona Gallery.

Benedetta Tagliabue describes Nutura as “a place that can be enjoyed from the inside and the outside, a place of peace and rest, built with natural elements and discovered little by little.” The pavilion’s undulating wooden and ceramic walls integrate seamlessly with Roca Gallery’s existing bamboo garden. Wooden lattices create varying levels of transparency resulting in a play of lights, shadow and texture, creating an overall sense of wellbeing and Mediterranean living. The pavilion’s floor is decorated with ceramic tiles in muted shades of blue and brown with allegorical drawings by Benedetta Tagliabue – EMBT Architects of Roca’s latest collections. These two collections lend their name to the pavilion: the Nu faucet collection, designed by Inma Bermúdez; and the Tura bathroom collection by Andreu Carulla.

Nutura also stands out for its remarkable journey, which began at the prestigious Fuorisalone in Milan. Its uniqueness lies in its profound commitment to sustainability and responsible transient interventions. Designed not only as a temporary installation, but also as a symbol of environmental awareness, Nutura is proof of both Roca and the architect’s commitment to sustainable design practices. Its evolution is a story of innovation and responsibility in ephemeral design, where each component is carefully selected for its potential reuse, emphasising the goal of reducing the overall environmental impact. Now, it has now found a new life in the dynamic city of Barcelona.

For over 25 years, Roca has been a committed collaborator with the Barcelona Centre de Disseny, a pillar of the city’s design culture. This enduring partnership underlines Roca's unwavering commitment to the world of design. In recognition of the importance of Roca’s long-standing presence at Barcelona Design Week, the Roca Barcelona Gallery was chosen to kick off the 18th edition, celebrating the collaboration between one of the city’s most renowned contemporary architects, and a local company with a history rooted in Barcelona.
